Domain name organiser Tralliance has revealed around half the buyers of its dot-travel names are based outside of North America.

The New York-based company has sold 20,000 dot-travel domain names in the past 14 months, with the majority going to US or Canadian websites.

President and chief executive Ron Andruff has revealed he is stepping down from day-to-day running of the business to work on its global business developments.

Tralliance-parent company TheGlobe.com has installed its president, Edward Cespedes, to become chief executive of the company.

Cespedes said: “In an online world dominated by search engine rankings, travel businesses cannot afford to sit on the sidelines and wait for their competitors to make a move before they register their own .travel domain names.

“The Internet community, and the way consumers search on the web, is about to undergo a paradigm shift. And when this fundamental change occurs, the playing field will be levelled."
