Skyscanner has launched “multi-hop” functionality to give users the option to search for combinations of low cost flights around the world.

The meta search engine will allow travellers to enter a departure airport and final destination before displaying the cheapest route with up to three changes.

The functionality will include 1,000 direct routes from the UK and 4,850 in-direct routes once users are off-shore.

Multi-Hop Flight Search has been billed as a major lead forward in the increasingly congested travel search sector following the arrival of Sidestep and Kayak from the US and the dominance of UK-based players such as TravelSupermarket, Cheapflights and Kelkoo.

It is hoped the tool will allow users to plan journeys more easily from regional airports.

Skyscanner chief executive Gareth Williams said: “The launch of the new Multi-Hop Flight Search is a very exciting addition to SkyScanner.net - we can now give users easy access to hundreds of new global destinations served by low cost airlines in one simple search and deliver the results in less than a second.”
