Ebookers has revealed consumer-facing research showing  that Brits will continue to travel despite the economic climate, although some people are  prepared to incur personal debt in order to have a break.

The findings are based on an online sample of just over 1000 people, 55% of whom said that holidays were "absolutely necessary or important" compared with 12% who consider them a luxury.

It appears that Brits are prepared to take packed lunches to work, cancel magazine subscriptions and sell unwanted goods online in order to afford a break.

However, 14% of the sample are prepared to increase overdrafts or use credit cards to pay for a holiday, with 8% prepared to take out a loan.

While more than half the sample are not prepared to change their chosen destination, operators and OTAs with a strong UK product will be pleased to know that more than a fifth of the sample  are 'more likely' to take a UK break, with young families the most inclined to take a break close to home. Older families are least likely to consider the UK.
