MobiExplore, a new European mobile content system for travellers, is launching in the UK this week following a hugely successful trial in Croatia this year.

The service works on all Symbian and Windows Mobile-based handsets as a free download and will initially be available on a country-by-country basis.

The offline data includes hotel listings, restaurants, places to visit, information on interesting “brands” – such as the Royal Family, Harrods and football clubs – as well as a fully interactive map platform.

The company behind the system, Gideon, piloted the system in Croatia earlier this year and achieved a massive 530,000 downloads.

An Italian version will be launched in December this year and the remaining top ten European countries – including France, Spain and Germany – expected by June 2009.

European managing director Gideon, Vedran Prazen, told Travolution the system is initially being launched on Symbian-Windows Mobile platforms due to its wider availability in the market but an iPhone and Google Android version is also planned.

It is hoped all hotels in a destination will be listed, but Prazen said they will eventually be displayed via a paid-for bidding system.
