Social networking giant Myspace has appointed Caroline Cartellieri, former UK managing director for Expedia, as its chief operating officer in Europe.

The online travel agency parted company with Cartellieri six months ago, replacing some her responsibilities in the UK with a new position of vice president EMEA for Alex Zivoder.

Cartellieri joined Expedia in October 2006 with a strong pedigree in retail brands such as Kingfisher. She also co-founded eDelights.com.

The appointment of a high profile figure in Cartellieri for the position at the News Corp-owned Myspace comes as the network continues to battle with arch rival Facebook as the leading social networking site on the internet.

Facebook triggered the launch of a huge number of travel-related tools in June 2007 when it allowed developers to create applications to run on member profile pages.

Tripadvisor and WAYN have seen some success with various mapping applications and online travel-related games.
