A smartphone travel guide app producer is looking to expand its business following investment by a software development company.

Pocket Places currently develops apps, including full audio guides, that are designed to replace conventional guidebooks, maps and leaflets from tourist information centres.

The company hopes to publish about 20 apps this year covering a range of domestic destinations including the Lake District, Devon and Cornwall, and London before broadening out to overseas destinations such as Barcelona and Amsterdam later in the year.

Now, following the investment of an undisclosed sum by Illusion Media, Pocket Places chief executive Mark Oakden said: “This investment allows us to scale up our business and deliver more travel content on both desktop and mobile.

“These are exciting times, with analysts forecasting the mobile app market to be worth $6 billion in 2010, rising to a staggering $29 billion in 2013.

“Our apps also take advantage of mobiles with GPS to automatically provide information on points of interest around a visitor’s location.”
